Saint-Maximin – Villa Latta

A commune in southeastern France, 40 km from Aix-en-Provence at the foot of the Sainte Baume mountains. Baume means “cave” in Provencal but also relates to the word “baume” that means “balm”.

The town's basilica is dedicated to Mary Magdalene. In 1279 the monks identified the “true relics” of Mary Magdalene found in the crypt. Her skull is on display in the crypt today.

During the Roman Empire the town was named Villa Latta.
